Floating

The practice of floating is a unique and increasingly popular form of therapy and relaxation with many physical and psychological benefits. A floatation tank, also known as a sensory deprivation tank, is a lightless, soundproof tank filled with salt water at skin temperature. The high salt concentration allows an individual to float effortlessly on the surface. The idea is to reduce external sensory input to the brain (sight, sound, tactile sensations). The concept was developed in the mid-20th century by John C. Lilly, a neuroscientist, to study the effects of sensory deprivation on the human brain and mind.

Benefits

1. Stress Reduction: One of the most touted benefits is stress relief. The sensory deprivation aspect can help calm the mind, reduce cortisol levels, and promote a state of deep relaxation.

2. Pain Relief: Floating can be beneficial for chronic pain sufferers, such as those with fibromyalgia or back pain. The weightlessness can relieve stress on the body, and the magnesium in the Epsom salts can help with muscle pain.

3. Enhanced Creativity and Concentration: Some users report enhanced creativity and problem-solving abilities after a session. This could be due to the deep relaxation state aiding in clearing the mind.

4. Improved Sleep: The deep relaxation experienced can help improve sleep patterns, making it a potential therapy for insomnia or sleep disturbances.

5. Mental Health Benefits: Studies have suggested benefits for mental health, including reduction in anxiety and depression symptoms. The isolation and quiet can provide a meditative experience, beneficial for mental wellbeing.

6. Physical Recovery: Athletes use floatation therapy for recovery. The magnesium absorption and muscle relaxation can aid in faster recovery and reduce muscle soreness.

My experience

The sense of weightlessness and the sensory deprivation in the tank work wonders, and it provides a unique environment that fosters deep mental and physical relaxation. It's not just a break from the external world and a renewed sense of calm. Over the years, floating has become far more than “just” a relaxation technique for me; Floating offers an accessible gateway into the world of meditation and mindfulness. It's incredible how effortlessly one can slip into a meditative state, surrounded by the soothing embrace of the float tank. Moreover, the physical benefits have been remarkable. As an avid athlete, the float tanks can be instrumental in my recovery process after intense workouts.

I've been a devoted visitor to Oslo Floating, the first floating center in Oslo, for nearly a decade now, and I can't help but share the incredible journey it has been. The moment I stepped into the tank at Oslo Floating  for the first time, it was like discovering a hidden oasis of peace. Carl, the owner at Oslo Floating, has created more than just a floating center; he has cultivated a warm, welcoming community where everyone is invited to explore the wonders of floating. Each visit feels like being embraced by old friends who genuinely care about your wellbeing.

I strongly echo Oslo Floating's belief that floating has something to offer everyone - whether you're seeking mental clarity, physical relief, or just a moment of serene escape. And Oslo Floating is the best place around.

PS: People with claustrophobia or severe anxiety might find the experience uncomfortable.
